    I noticed a few folks called the $400 a retainer versus the original poster called the $400 a deposit. I changed the wording of my own contact based upon conversations years ago with members of this forum. IJS

    I would highly suggest a different alternative to deposit, retainer, et al.

    Payment.

    And if one needs to further identify what it is, call it:
    1) a contract signing payment;
    2) a monthly time plan payment;
    3) a final balance payment.

    There are not as many arguably definition variations and meanings for the word ... PAYMENT !

    I VIGOROUSLY second that sage advice and UNEQUIVOCALLY acknowledge the wisdom therein!

    Neither word really matters until you precede it with a select modifier such as "non-refundable."

    Deposits, retainers, payments, yaddah, yaddah, .... there is no magic power inherent in any one of those words. You have to add it with select modifiers.

    UPDATE:

    Since posting this about six weeks ago, I have since scheduled another wedding for the same August date at the same rate as the one that cancelled. Plus a sound system for an Air and Car show (on the same day) that is double the income that the cancelled bride would have paid.

    So, all is well that turns out well I guess. The day became available again, and more than enough "filled" in for the lost wedding.

    Because of this turn of events and the opportunity to reschedule I chose to return the full $400.00 prepayment/deposit/retainer.

    Thanks for the update. I hope that pays it forward for you for your next cancellation.
